Andrea Davis

Andrea 5x7,bw_WebBackground: I was born in the wonderful Caribbean island of Jamaica. My fascination with language and love of fiction led me to Canada to complete first an MA and then a PhD in English, which culminated in a teaching career at York University. Transferring my passion and formal training to the needs of corporate clients comes naturally to me; my goal is to excite them about the possibilities of writing.

Likes: Verbs. Helping writers discover they can be fabulous communicators by showing them how to convert a concept or idea into words that work. Cat Deeley on So You Think You Can Dance. The color pink. The fiction of Toni Morrison, Erna Brodber and Edwidge Danticat.

Dislikes: All-caps. Scary movies. Comma splices.

Education: BA (first class hons.) from University of the West Indies (Mona Campus). MA and PhD English, York University.

Favorite quote: “How simple a thing it seems to me that to know ourselves as we are, we must know our mothers’ names.” Alice Walker

What I do in the rest of my life: In addition to books, I love art, theatre and jazz—the Stratford Shakespeare Festival and Toronto Jazz Festivals are highlights of my summers. I’m also learning Afro-Cuban dance and when I can, I travel. My favorite places to date are Cape Coast, Ghana, and Cape Town, South Africa.
