Background: Since I finished my master’s degree in 1990, I’ve been doing a blend of teaching and writing, including corporate and technical writing as well as freelance journalism. I’ve taught in a variety of academic and corporate settings and my writing has appeared in national publications such as the Globe and Mail, Toronto Life, Canadian Living and Today’s Parent. I also write fiction; my short stories have appeared in Grimm Magazine, Descant and Prairie Fire, and I’ve just completed my first novel.
Likes: The semi-colon, possibly overmuch. Dark chocolate. Travel (I’ve lived in England). Teaching writing, especially when participants want a vigorous debate about just about any aspect of it—I love that level of engagement. French fries. Scrabble. Languages, lots of them: I speak French, some German and am learning Italian.
Dislikes: Home fries (it’s my one irrational food rule). Reality TV. Misuse of the apostrophe.
Education: Honours BA (Literature) and MA (Language and Professional Writing), University of Waterloo. Summer fiction school, Humber College.
Favourite quote: “There’s a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” Leonard Cohen, Anthem.
What I do in the rest of my life: I’m an avid cyclist and often get to watch the sun rise over Lake Ontario. Yoga is a regular part of my life, as is theater—I’m especially fond of Tom Stoppard’s work, and I have a budding thespian at home. And I read, constantly, fiction and non-fiction. Favourite authors: Louis de Bernières, Orham Pamuk, Margaret Laurence, James Joyce, Barbara Gowdy, Ian McEwan, Per Pettersen.
