Background: Known professionally as “The Word Nerd,” I have been enjoying life as an author, speaker and educator. In 2007, I wrote the book Language Logic: Practical and Effective Techniques to Learn Any Foreign Language with the goal of improving language education in Canada. Recently, I was the keynote speaker at the Council of Ministers of Education Directors’ Conference.
Throughout my career, I have worked for both HarperCollins Publishers UK and Oxford University Press Canada. I have also taught business writing in France and also at Vancouver Film School. Other pursuits include being a cultural columnist, exchange student, Canadian contributor to the Collins Dictionary and evaluator of the Grade 12 French provincial exams for the Ministry of Education. Currently, I am working on a book by a three-time Canadian Olympian entitled Not About the Medal. I am also the founder of the French-for-the-West Language Learning Conference.
Education: Master of Publishing, Simon Fraser University; Bachelor of Arts (double major: English/French), University of British Columbia, Université de Montréal and Université le Mirail, France
Likes: Canadian spelling. Foreign languages. Organizational gadgets. A well-made bed. Puns. Singing in the shower. Dunking buttered toast into hot chocolate.
Dislikes: Clutter. Lack of etiquette in the theatre – the performers deserve more.
Favourite Quote: “Dare, and the world will yield.” Barry Lyndon
What I do in the rest of my life: Newly engaged, I am taking the year, along with some friends, to cultivate ourselves in the 18th century ideal of an “accomplished” woman. I look forward to impressing loved ones with my newly acquired singing, dancing, drawing, painting, sewing and cooking skills. “I never saw such a woman,” stated Jane Austen’s Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice. “She would certainly be a fearsome thing to behold.” Let’s see what happens!
